Dark Horse Publishing Goes Live
Updated: Dec 8, 2018
They say starting your own business is a labor of love, and having learned firsthand what that is like, I would have to agree with the sentiment. We here at Dark Horse have spent many a sleepless night bringing the website you see here to life. However, that is just the tip of the iceberg. Curious what the hardest part of building a business is?
First though, let's just a take a moment to tip our hats to all those who have come before us. It's incredible the amount of effort needed to breathe a business to life.
So, without further ado let's discuss the top thing you don't realize will be a pain in the butt when you're building a business.
The Magnitude of Decisions

In honor of the season, I'm illustrating this point with a nod to seasonal decorations. Let's assume that you're an artist and you've gathered (or been provided!) this excellent collection of fall/winter items to build a collage with. When you first decide to build a business, you look at the business very much the same way. You have a gathering of pieces (relatively big pieces) that you are convinced will go together into a beautiful harmony.
Some pieces are behind the scene's pieces, like tax structure, or location of incorporation, while some pieces are front-and-center, like the need for a webpage and social media presence. If you're lucky, you have a really good idea of what these items are and what they look like.
Fortunately, we were very lucky and knew a good bit about what we wanted, but that really didn't help us all that much. When it comes down to it, "you never actually know what you really want."
Let's take a look at that collection of pine cones and berries again. What differs about building a business is that those pieces and items are built by you. Every last little prickle on the pine cone to every last vein in the leaf is decided upon, weighed, measured, talked about, surveyed, and then revised after being placed. For every button on the web page, the following questions were asked, answered, and finally implemented.
What color when it's just sitting there?
What color when someone hovers on it?
What color font?
What type font?
What size font?
Should there be shadow?
Does this look modern enough?
Why are we out of wine?
Should it have a box border?
Where on the page should the button be?
The list goes on and on, but you get the idea. Those are very real questions and they just center around a stupid button! It's maddening that something so insignificant becomes such a task. So, image the questions you ask when you're talking about tax implications, business structure, mission statements, financing and target markets. You spend a lot of time talking about needing more wine, we'll tell you that.
But in the end, if you're really lucky, all those questions put all those beautiful pieces together into a business (or collage) you can be proud of.
